The Role of Entertainment in Civic Life

We live in a shifting ecosystem where entertainment and media are the connecting threads between communities. Gaming, music, and sports are not just hobbies, they are cultural hubs where people form identity, build friendships, and shape their worldview.

For young people especially, gaming has become one of the most influential cultural spaces. Over 40% of Gen Z socialize more in video games than in real life (Deloitte), and more than a third of Millennials engage with gaming communities through conversations, podcasts, or online platforms. These spaces are powerful avenues for connection, but also vulnerable to manipulation.

Threats in Gaming & Entertainment Spaces

While entertainment can unite people, it can also be exploited. Right-wing extremists and authoritarian influencers have deliberately entered these spaces to normalize harassment, spread hate speech, and recruit vulnerable audiences.

  • Nearly two out of three gamers (64%) have been directly targeted by hate speech, and 82% have witnessed it in gaming spaces (Dr. Kowert, Extremism in Games report).

  • The Anti-Defamation League found that exposure to white-supremacist ideology in online games more than doubled from 2021 to 2022.

  • From Gamergate to modern harassment campaigns, extremist organizing in gaming culture has shown that these spaces are far from apolitical.

Forming curriculum around games and content people already love. From modules framed in game simulations, to Minecraft/Roblox civic maps, or explainer videos that blend play with lessons in civic power, digital safety, and financial independence.
